US Navy to Showcase Nimitz Virtual Reality Experience at Seafair – Everett Post

At Seafair, Friday, August 5th – Sunday, August 7th, the US Navy will showcase the Nimitz, a mobile, state-of-the-art virtual reality experience that simulates a high-speed extraction of Navy SEALS under fire.

Inside the Nimitz, which is housed in a massive 18-wheeler, participants go through a video briefing before strapping on an Oculus Rift headset and a piece of wearable technology called a SubPac. The SubPac is similar to a haptic vest that is worn by VR gaming users, which gives off vibrations to simulate real life contact and percusses in real time to the sounds of the mission. Visitors navigate the mission using a cutting-edge steering wheel and throttle system that replicates the actual sensation of piloting a high-speed, Navy Special Warfare Combatant Craft. Once finished, participants move to the debriefing station, where they receive feedback and a performance grade.

The Nimitz showcases how the Navy utilizes and develops the most advanced technology in the world and offers more than 60 career fields in leading-edge STEM areas such as nuclear engineering, IT, cryptology and Special Warfare. “Our simulation has a focus on using STEM learning, as we want to show users what opportunities the Navy brings,” said a Navy Spokesperson. Nimitz events serve as an opportunity for the Navy to share information about its $50,000 enlistment bonus program, free college education, best-in-class training, and accelerated promotion opportunities.

“For the experience there are 8 VR stations currently housed within the truck, with a full 360 range of movement and motion. Other activities include a chin up competition area, and multiple information booths provided by the Navy. According to the Navy spokesperson, “The Nimitz presents the realities of specific Navy missions in an interactive way. It’s about as realistic as it gets.

The Nimitz Virtual Reality Experience will be running from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at this weekend’s upcoming Seafair.
