These responses are not only hysterical, but emblematic of the response Barbie has been getting so far. Despite fans knowing nothing about the plot, or even which characters much of the Barbie movie cast will play, Gerwig’s new project has already gained a massive online following. It seems that every time anything about the film is released, it takes Twitter by storm, with people instantly memeing aspects of the film or expressing their growing excitement to see it.

Barbie, on its face, is an unusual film to even be made. The mere fact that there is a live-action Barbie film being made directed by a serious, three-time-Oscar-nominated director in Gerwig is notable, but adding on such a high-profile cast is additionally surprising. However, Barbie‘s rampant internet appeal already suggests that, despite its unlikely pairings, people are willing to buy into whatever Gerwig is making. Time will tell whether Barbie‘s critical and box-office performances will live up to the massive early hype it has been getting.
