Online commenters bashed a father on Sunday who “forgot” about his daughter’s 10th birthday.
Posting in Reddit’s “True Off My Chest” forum under the username u/A_Mandinha, the girl’s older sibling wrote: “I f**king hate my dad and what he did to my sister.” The post has garnered 9,500 upvotes and hundreds of comments from disgusted Redditors. You can read the full post here.
u/A_Mandinh told Redditors that his parents got divorced last year and that he and his sister both live with their mom because their dad “preferred it that way.”
Divorce in America
Divorce has become a rather common phenomenon in the United States. According to Fatherly, 36 percent of all US marriages end in divorce, meaning 50 percent of children “will witness the end of their parents’ marriage.” Further, nearly a quarter—21 percent—of American children live with only their mothers, making it the “second most common” living arrangement in the country, the US Census Bureau reported last year.
While children of divorce are more likely to experience behavioral problems, poor academic performance, and increased mental health problems, Verywell Family says open communication and peaceful co-parenting, among other things, can help reduce the “psychological toll” of divorce on children.
“Fear of abandonment and concerns about the future can cause a lot of anxiety. But helping your child feel loved, safe, and secure can not only reduce clinginess but also diminish the risk of mental health problems,” the site said.
Unfortunately, u/A_Mandinh’s father hasn’t been around much since the divorce and his recent blunder has left his daughter feeling “completely depressed.”
‘I Hate Him’
u/A_Mandinh’s younger sister turned 10 on Saturday, and to celebrate, she wanted nothing more than to grab dinner with her dad, whom she hadn’t seen “in months.”
“He said he would pick up my sister here at 7 pm and they would go to McDonald’s or something,” u/A_Mandinh said. “She got all dressed up, wore a beautiful outfit and even asked me to do makeup on her. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her so excited about anything.”
Unfortunately, their dad never arrived.
“We waited for over two hours. And he didn’t show up. He didn’t respond to messages and didn’t answer any calls either,” u/A_Mandinh said. “My sister cried so much that she woke up [Sunday] with bulging eyes. She hasn’t eaten anything yet and is completely depressed.”
Their dad called Sunday and said he “completely forgot” about the dinner date, but this excuse didn’t satisfy u/A_Mandinh.
“I hate him so much. I hate him. I hate him. I don’t know what else to do but say I hate him,” he concluded.
In a statement to Newsweek on Monday, u/A_Mandinh said his sister is still upset.
“She didn’t even go to school today. My mom and I are talking to her and doing what we can to make her feel better. Tonight we’re taking her out to dinner and we’ve invited some close friends of hers to come with us.”
Commenters slammed the dad for forgetting his daughter’s birthday, saying he was a “trash” father.
“How the f**k do you forget the day your kid was born like???? And why the f**k hasn’t he seen her in months?” Horrornerd3000 asked. “He’s trash and I’m sorry your sister got her heart broken yesterday and that you are left to pick up the pieces of it.”
“Someone who doesn’t care to that degree doesn’t deserve to be called father. I’m so sorry about your sister,” u/Brave-Wind-183 said.
u/binx221 added: “I hate him too and he’s not even my dad.”
